If you’ve ever sat down at the table, asked a question, and gotten a shrug or a one-word answer, you’re not doing it wrong. Trust me, I was totally used to that! You’re just out of practice. Most of us are.

Anyone else used to living super fast? We’re used to talking in passing. We’ve mastered the conversations happening in cars, through texts, or while everyone is half-focused on something else. Almost like micro-conversations. We can get something across but where is the connection? What most families need are simple family dinner questions that make it easier to start talking without forcing anything.

So when you suddenly sit down and say, “How was your day?” it feels awkward. Kids stare at their plates. Adults feel the silence. Someone eventually says, “Fine,” and everyone goes back to eating.

That doesn’t mean your family is broken. It may just mean conversations will take a little getting used to.

You absolutely don’t need the perfect question. You 110% don’t need a deep moment every night. That’s how you’ll scare your kids away. You just need a simple question that opens the door.

That is what this list is for.

40 Family Dinner Questions That Actually Work

These questions are simple on purpose. Kids can answer them in one sentence or take their time. Parents and older siblings can answer, too. Nothing here requires deep thinking or emotional speeches. Maybe it leads to that, but it’s not the goal every time. The questions are simply about sharing what is going on in our individual worlds.

Pick one. Ask it. Listen.

Fun and Light

What made you laugh today?

Did anything surprising or unexpected happen today?

If today had a title, what would you call it?

What was the most interesting part of your day?

Who did you talk to the most today, and why?

What was the best thing you ate today?

If today was a movie, what kind would it be?

What was the funniest thing you noticed today?

What is one small thing that made today better?

If you could replay one moment from today, what would it be?

School, Work, and Everyday Life

What is one thing you learned today?

What was the hardest part of your day?

What is one thing you wish had gone differently today?

What is one small win you had today?

When did you feel proud of yourself today?

Was there a moment today that felt stressful?

What took the most energy today?

What was something you finished today?

What was something you started today?

What is one thing tomorrow might bring?

Feelings and Growth

When did you feel really listened to today?

When did you feel frustrated or annoyed today?

When did you feel brave today?

Was there a moment you felt unsure or nervous?

When was it hard to do the right thing today?

Did you feel left out or included today?

When did you feel confident today?

Is there anything that is still sitting with you from today?

What is something you are still thinking about?

What do you wish someone had noticed today?

Gratitude and Faith

What is one thing you are thankful for today?

Who do you appreciate in our family, and why?

What is one way you showed kindness today?

What is one way someone showed kindness to you today?

What is something good you noticed today?

What is one thing you are looking forward to?

Is there anything you are worried about right now?

What is something you need help with right now?

What is one thing you want prayer for tonight?

What is one thing you are thankful God was with you in today?

How to Use These Questions

Research has consistently shown that regular family meals support connection, communication, and emotional health.

You don’t need to turn this into a system. I have my family dinner questions written on index cards and held together by a metal ring.

Here are a few simple help tips:

Ask one question per meal

Let everyone answer, including adults

Do not correct, fix, or lecture

Short answers are okay

Silence is okay

Some nights, conversations will flow. Everyone will want to talk. That one question may lead to many different topics of conversation. Maybe even deeply connected ones. BUT Some nights, answers will be silent. It will be like pulling teeth to get responses.

Keep this in mind…Both count and are super important.

The goal is not deep conversations every night. The goal is creating space where conversation and connection can happen. Don’t force anything. I promise that with consistency, this will become a treasured time around the table.

Start Simple

If this feels new or awkward, that is normal. I remember when we started. It felt so weird. So formal. And if it feels like that, you’re not behind. You’re just starting and it will get easier and more natural.

If you want these questions in a simple, one-page printable you can bring to the table, we put together a free version you can download and use right away.

And if you want to understand why this works and why the family table matters so much, start with The Family Table: Why Feeding Souls Matters More Than Feeding Bodies.

It’s just one question, one meal, and one step towards intentional connection.

When you hear about bringing intentional questions to the dinner table, your first reaction is probably not excitement. How does it make you feel? Pressure? Fear?

What about thoughts like:

“We aren’t consistent enough for that.”

“Our schedules are all over the place.”

“We barely eat together as it is.”

“My kids will roll their eyes.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not missing anything. You’re actually very normal. Most families don’t need another big thing to do. They need permission to start something small that will stick. A new family dinner ritual that doesn’t feel like work.

This is not about adding something overwhelming to your week. It is about taking a moment that already exists and giving it a little more purpose.

Intention Matters More Than Frequency

Let me clear this up. Doing this once a week counts. Doing it twice a week counts too.
Doing it most nights is the goal, but it’s not the starting line.

More than how often you do it, what matters is sitting down together and doing it on purpose. One intentional question once a week will do more for connection than eating together every night while everyone is distracted.

Research on habit-building shows that small, repeatable actions are far more effective than big changes that feel overwhelming. Consistency grows over time. Connection will create a desire for a higher frequency. Pressure is what kills momentum.

How to Pick a Question

Here’s the deal: don’t overcomplicate this.

Pick one question that:

feels natural to ask

fits the mood of the night

does not require a deep answer

Some nights may call for something light. Some nights may feel more reflective. And some nights call for, “What made you laugh today?” and nothing more. Just sit back and enjoy! You’re not trying to unlock the souls of everyone in one meal.

You are just opening the door. Giving space.

You can download our list of questions HERE.

What to Do When It Feels Awkward

Spoiler alert…it probably will.

We get used to silence or shallow conversations at the table. However, this kind of silence can be totally different. So creating opportunities for connection can feel awkward as well as quiet.

Here are some tips that can help:

Let adults answer first

Keep your answer honest but simple

Do not rush to fill the silence

Do not force anyone to respond

If a kid says, “I don’t know,” let that be okay. Sometimes, safety comes before the words. Seeing and hearing others’ answers can encourage participation.

Awkward doesn’t mean it’s not working. It usually means something new is forming.

Simple Rules That Keep This Family Dinner Ritual Sustainable

A few boundaries can make this last.

Ask one question, not several

Everyone gets a turn, including adults

No correcting, fixing, or lecturing

Short answers count

Laughter counts

This is not a teaching moment. It’s a listening moment. You are building trust, deepening relationships through connection, not extracting information.

Why This Small Family Dinner Ritual Matters

When families do this over time, something shifts. Kids learn their voice matters and discover their identity. Parents slow down long enough to listen and maybe learn new things about their kids. The table can ultimately become a place people want to be and not rush away from.

Faith becomes natural, not forced. This is what I love. Creating a space for our family to discuss faith and feel natural is so important to me! Connection moves from awkward to normal.

Here’s the great news: none of it requires perfection. Just intention.

Start With One Meal

You don’t need a system. I have 7 questions we rotate through. The questions are written on index cards and held together by a keyring. lol!

You don’t need to overhaul your schedule. We simply added this to our dinner routine. It’s that simple.

You don’t need to do this every night. That’s my goal, but it doesn’t happen. There are times when our older kids aren’t at home. I have forgotten some nights. Honestly, in the beginning, there were a few times that I chickened out.

At a minimum, just pick one meal this week. Bring one question to the table. Ask, answer, and listen.

If you want help choosing questions, we put together a simple one-page printable with 20 family table questions you can use right away.

And if you want to understand why this matters so much, start with The Family Table, where we talk about how dinner shapes connection, faith, and emotional safety over time.

Why Feeding Souls Matters More Than Feeding Bodies

A while back, we were sitting down to eat at the kitchen bar. Food was on our plates. Everyone was technically “there.” But more than half of us were mentally somewhere else. One kid was barely looking up from their phone. Another was eating like it was a NASCAR pit stop so they could get back to their room.

Kasey and I were staring at our food, tired, wondering how it got to be this late. Dinner after 8pm again! No one was fighting. No one was melting down. But no one was really connecting either. And I remember thinking, “Well… this is not what I imagine the family table would look like at this point in our lives.”

We were feeding bodies just fine. Trust me, Kasey is an amazing cook. But something else was missing.

What We Have Reduced the Table To

Somewhere along the way, the family table became a drive-through or fast food at best. Sit down. Eat fast. Get back to life.

We didn’t mean for it to happen. It just kind of did. For us, we used to always eat around our table. Somewhere along the way we got into a bad habit of eating at the kitchen bar. We usually always eat together but something about the bar creates a rushed dinner and no lingering for connection.

Between practices, work, homework, screens, exhaustion, and everything else, dinner slowly turned into something we squeezed in instead of something we gathered around. Most nights, we were all in the same room but living in different worlds. And the quiet lie underneath it all was that as long as everyone eats together, it counts.

But families are built on conversation. On listening. On feeling seen, heard, and safe.

When the table becomes just another task to get through, everything else starts to thin out. Kids stop sharing. Marriages drift into logistics (roommate) mode. Faith becomes something you occasionally talk about instead of something you live out together.

You can have a full table and still feel strangely alone. Let that sink in! We realized we were doing dinner, but we were not really doing family.

The Table Was Always About Formation

Here is the part most of us miss. The family table has never just been about food. It’s always been about formation (or what is being developed on the inside over time).

Every time you sit down together, something is being shaped. Kids are learning if their voice matters. Spouses are practicing how they treat each other. The emotional tone of your home is being quietly set.

None of that requires a big speech. It happens through repetition. Through presence. Through showing up to the same space again and again. And scripture actually understood this long before we did.

Deuteronomy 6 doesn’t talk about passing faith in a classroom. It talks about passing it while you sit down, walk around, lie down, and get up. In other words, in everyday life. In the little mundane moments that seem so insignificant.

The family table is one of the most powerful places where those moments happen. It’s where gratitude is learned. Where prayer becomes natural. Where laughter, frustration, and honesty all have a seat.

You don’t have to be a perfect parent to shape your kids. Wow, thank God! My kids were going to be way out of luck!! lol. You just have to be there. And the family table gives you a place to actually do that.

What Actually Happens at the Family Table

Most of what matters in a family is never said out loud. It’s absorbed. At the table, our kids are quietly answering questions they’ll probably never ask directly.

Do I matter here?
Am I safe to be myself?
Will anyone listen when I talk?
Does my life matter to the people I belong to?

When your child is interrupted, ignored, or brushed off night after night, something starts to form. It’s not a good something, either. When your child is seen, listened to, and invited into conversation, something else forms.

The table becomes our mirror. Not of perfection, but of belonging. The same thing happens in our marriages.

The tone at the table shapes the tone of the home. Respect, irritation, teamwork, or distance all get practiced there, whether we mean to or not.

Even faith becomes real or hollow at the table. Not through long prayers. But through the small ones.
Not through lectures but through gratitude. Not through pressure but through presence.

If we’re willing to slow down as a family, God can have room to move in ordinary moments.

That is why the table matters. Not because it’s spiritual. Because it is formative.

Why the Table Gets Eroded

The family table doesn’t usually disappear because someone decided to destroy it. It slowly starts to erode.

Busyness creeps in. Schedules stack up. Fatigue takes over. Phones slide onto the table. Distraction becomes normal. Nobody sets out to lose connection it just slowly happens. The danger is not necessarily chaos. It’s a silent drift.

Conversations shrink. Kids emotionally retreat. Marriages become about logistics instead of life. I call this living with your roommate. Faith gets pushed to the margins because there is just no space or time left for it.

Not all of this happens at once. But if you pay attnetion it’s enough to feel it.

The Family Table as an Anchor

This is not about turning your family into one of those perfect, matching-outfits, candles-on-the-table, Instagram households. C’mon. That’s not even close to real life. I’m not sure that’s what most common folk like me are interested in.

Real life is loud. Kids are tired. Dinner is sometimes frozen pizza, leftovers, or cereal. We call it a fend-for-yourself night! Someone is often mad about something. That’s just how families work.

The power of the table is not how it looks but how often you come back to it.

Not gourmet meals (unless that’s your thing). Not perfect behavior (this would disqualify our home). Not some nightly performance of togetherness. And not forced conversations because that just gets weird.

What matters is consistency over quality, presence over presentation, and intention over execution. Last night’s table top descended into complete chaos. Good chaos. The important part is that we were all together, at the table, and super connected.

The table becomes an anchor when it is simply where you keep showing up. Even in the middle of the mess. Even when it feels awkward. And especially when it’s totally not magical.

Three Simple Practices We Bring to the Table

We didn’t overhaul our whole dinner routine. We just started bringing three small things into the space.

The first is one intentional question. Something simple that invites our kids (2 college and 2 elementary age) to talk instead of just chew. To engage rather than stay in their own world, alone.

The second is that nothing is forced. If the question is just not hitting…don’t force it. Take a step back and just engage your family where they’re at. Our older kids are not afraid to call us out if we try to force something to happen.

The third is prayer. Not long or fancy. Just a moment of gratitude and asking God to be with us.

That’s it. It’s simple. No speeches. No pressure. Just small practices that change the atmosphere of the room.

Download your ONE QUESTION free printable HERE.

Start Where You Are

If you’re thinking, “We don’t do this perfectly,” welcome to the club. Neither do we. But you don’t have to change everything to change something.

You can start with one meal.
One question.
One moment of intention.

We put together a simple one-page printable with 20 family table questions to make this easy to try without overthinking it.

Print it, grab it, bring it to your next meal, and see where it goes.

That’s how this starts. Not with a big promise but with a small intentional interruption.

A lot of men don’t go quiet because they don’t care. They go quiet because they really do care.

I know this because I’ve done it. More times than I want to admit. And I wish I could say it’s still not a challenge.

Men shut down emotionally in marriage all the time, but rarely talk about it. And it’s not because men are cold or unloving. It’s because silence feels safer than being exposed or uncomfortable.

There have been many moments in my marriage when I felt overwhelmed, misunderstood, triggered, or unsure of what to say. Instead of speaking up, I pulled back. I went silent. Not because I didn’t love Kasey, but because staying present felt more risky and almost impossible.

If you’re reading this and thinking, Yeah, that sounds like me, you are not alone!!

Silence Does Not Mean You Don’t Care

When we are quiet, people often assume we don’t care. That we’ve checked out or are emotionally unavailable. But most of the time, silence isn’t apathy. It is protection.

When I go quiet, it’s usually because I don’t feel steady and safe on the inside. I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing. I’m afraid of making things worse. I’m afraid of being misunderstood. I’m afraid of being rejected. So I say nothing.

For a moment, that feels safer than speaking.

This is why so many emotionally unavailable husbands aren’t actually unavailable. They’re men who don’t feel safe staying present when things feel heavy or too intense.

How A Lot of Boys Learned to Go Silent

For many of us, this did not start in marriage. It started when we were kids. A lot of boys were never taught how to talk about what they feel. Some of us were told to toughen up. Some of us were ignored when we spoke. Some of us learned that sharing feelings only caused problems.

So we adapted and went silent.

We learned to keep things inside.
We learned to stay quiet.
We learned that being emotional was not safe.

I know for me, there were times growing up when speaking up didn’t feel safe. I come from a family that really didn’t talk about anything. It felt easier to keep things to myself than to risk being shut down or misunderstood.

That training doesn’t just disappear when you get married.

It shows up when your wife is upset.
It shows up when things get intense.
It shows up when you don’t know what to say or you feel unsafe.

Silence becomes your default setting, even when you want connection.

What That Looks Like in Marriage

This is where things get confusing.

You love your wife. You want things to be better. But you still find yourself pulling back.

So instead of saying you are hurt, you go quiet. Instead of saying you feel overwhelmed, you shut down. Instead of asking for what you need, you disappear emotionally. This is how many of us go silent. Even when we care deeply.

From the outside, it can look like you’re cold and don’t care. But from the inside, it feels like you are just trying to survive the moment. This is why men withdraw in marriage. Not because they don’t love their wives, but they just don’t feel safe expressing what is going on inside.

Why Silence Feels Safer Than Speaking

Your nervous system goes into protection mode when things get emotional.

Your body starts thinking:
What if I say the wrong thing?
What if I make this worse?
What if I get rejected or misunderstood?
What if no one cares?

So you freeze. You go quiet. You shut down. It is not something you choose on purpose. It is a reflex. Your silence feels safer than being seen.

The Gottman Institute calls this pattern stonewalling, which is when someone goes silent not to punish their partner, but because they feel emotionally overwhelmed and shut down.

And if you learned as a kid that your feelings weren’t welcome, that reflex runs deep.

How Emotional Shutdown Affects Your Marriage

Even though silence feels safer in the moment, it slowly creates distance.

Your wife feels alone. You feel misunderstood. And connection starts to fade.

This kind of emotional shutdown in marriage does not usually happen all at once. It happens little by little. Not because anyone is trying to hurt the other, but because neither of you feels truly met. This is not about blame. It’s about awareness.

How A Man Can Start Coming Back

You don’t fix this by becoming a great communicator overnight. That just won’t happen. You fix it by staying.

Staying in the moment.
Staying in the conversation.
Staying present, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Start small. Notice what you feel. Name one emotion. Share one honest sentence.

You don’t have to get it right. You just have to remain present. And if this feels hard (and it will!) that does not mean you’re broken. It actually means you’re unlearning something you were taught a long time ago.

If you want a deeper look at how this connects to leadership in marriage, you can read my main post on why men struggle to lead in marriage.

You’re not weak because you go quiet. You’re learning how to come back. And that is where real change begins.

Why Leadership Feels So Hard for Men

Men want to lead. I want to lead. That desire is built into us. We were created that way. Most men genuinely want to lead well in their marriages. So, let’s look at why men struggle to lead in marriage.

The problem is not that men are lazy or checked out on purpose.
Leadership just feels super heavy.

Instead of confidence, there’s pressure.
Instead of clarity, there’s confusion.
Instead of connection, there’s distance.

So we do one of two things. We go quiet, or we try to take control. Neither feels great. Neither works for long. But when you are under pressure, it feels like survival.

Sound familiar? Yeah. Me too.

Most of us were never taught what leadership in marriage actually looks like. We were handed responsibility and told to figure it out under pressure. It’s like being pushed into the deep end of a pool without really knowing how to swim.

That makes leadership feel like something you survive instead of something you live.

This is not about fixing your wife or winning arguments. It’s about understanding why men struggle to lead in marriage. It’s about why leadership feels so hard in the first place and what actually helps.

The Lie Men Were Taught About Leadership

Here is what many of us grew up believing.

If you are leading, you should have answers.
You should know what to do.
You should stay strong.
You should fix problems.

That word should matters. It carries shame. It implies failure before you even begin.

This belief sounds reasonable until marriage tests it. And oh boy will it test it!

Marriage isn’t a problem you solve but a relationship you stay present in.

When leadership is defined as having answers, pressure builds fast. Every conflict feels like a test. Every emotional moment feels like failure. Big arguments start to feel like destruction instead of something you can move through.

So most guys go one of two directions.

Some try to control. They push for solutions. They manage emotions. They want things settled quickly. I’m raising my hand here. You?

Others pull back. They go quiet. They avoid hard conversations. They tell themselves it’s better to lie low. I’m raising my other hand here too. What?!

Fear shows up in both places. When fear is underneath it all, some men pull back to protect themselves, and others push to regain a sense of safety. Neither is leadership. They are both ways of coping when staying present feels impossible.

Why Leadership Feels So Heavy

Leadership feels heavy because many of us are trying to lead from the outside instead of the inside.

We try to fix what we can see but ignore what’s going on inside us.
We react to emotions instead of staying steady.
We try to keep everything from falling apart, even when we don’t feel steady ourselves.

That creates a lot of internal pressure, which often turns into quiet thoughts like:

I’m never enough.
I’m always messing this up.
I should be better at this.

This is not loud shame. It sits under the surface. Over time, it starts to feel like part of who we are. It’s one of the main reasons why men struggle to lead in marriage.

And shame makes leadership feel unsafe.

So we shut down. Not because we don’t care, but because caring feels too risky. Leadership starts to feel draining instead of life-giving.

Trying harder does not fix that. It just keeps us on the hamster wheel.

The Passive and Control Trap

Passivity and control are not opposites. They are kind of like fraternal twins. They are two reactions to fear.

Passivity looks calm, but it is often self-protection.

It sounds like:

I don’t want to make things worse.
I’ll just let it go.
It’s not worth the fight.

On the outside, it looks peaceful. On the inside, it’s a man trying to protect himself when leadership feels unsafe.

Control is the louder version.

It looks like:

Pushing for outcomes.
Correcting emotions.
Forcing clarity before understanding.

Control feels productive, but it’s still driven by fear. It’s about reducing your discomfort, not leading well.

Here is the key point. Passivity and control both avoid presence.

One retreats.
One pushes.
Neither stays steady.

Leadership looks like staying present without forcing and without disappearing. Most of us were never shown how to do that, so it feels impossible.

Why Repair Alone Doesn’t Last

When things are not going well, I usually jump straight to repair. Most guys do. God wired us to fix things.

We apologize.
We promise change.
We try counseling.
We work harder.

None of that is bad but repair without inner change usually doesn’t last.

Repair focuses on behavior, not posture. It focuses on fruit, not the root.

You can say the right words and still feel defensive inside.
You can change habits but stay disconnected.
You can comply without truly being present.

So after a while, the same patterns can come back. That’s why so many men feel discouraged. We tried. We did the work. But nothing really shifted.

Repair isn’t wrong.
It’s incomplete when it stands alone.

This is where formation matters.

Formation is simply who we become on the inside over time. It shapes how we show up when things are tense, emotions are high, nothing is clear, or we feel misunderstood and tired.

Marriage doesn’t heal because we try harder.
It heals because we become present.

Leadership Is About Who You’re Being, Not What You’re Fixing

When things get hard in marriage, most of us go straight into fix-it mode.

What do I say?
How do I solve this?
How do I make this stop?

That makes sense. We are wired to solve problems.

But marriage isn’t just a problem to fix. It is a relationship that responds to presence.

Leadership is less about having the perfect solution and more about how you show up. Are you calm or reactive? Steady or defensive? Present or checked out?

People feel posture before they hear words. Two men can say the same thing and get very different results. One may be rushed or defensive. The other may be calm and grounded. The words might sound similar, but they land differently.

That difference is leadership.

Fixing things matters. It just comes second.

Leadership shows up in simple ways:

Staying present in a hard conversation.

Listening without rushing to explain or defend.

Owning a mistake without excuses.

Taking initiative without trying to control outcomes.

Research from the Gottman Institute shows that emotional awareness and responsiveness are closely tied to healthy leadership and connection, especially in close relationships.

What Leadership Actually Is

Leadership is simpler than we make it.

It’s not control.
It’s not dominance.
It’s not having all the answers.

Leadership looks like:

Taking responsibility without resentment.

Staying present when things feel uncomfortable.

Initiating instead of waiting.

Holding steady instead of shutting down.

A steady man doesn’t rush.
A grounded man does not disappear.
A secure man doesn’t need control.

This is what makes a marriage feel safe.

The Cost of Not Leading

When leadership is missing, the cost is real.

Distance grows.
Trust erodes.
Intimacy fades.

Not overnight. Slowly. Until you feel like roommates.

No explosion. No dramatic ending. Just a slow and steady drift.

This is not punishment.
It’s a consequence.

Where You Can Start Right Now

This does not start with fixing your wife or your marriage. It starts with you.

Three simple places to begin.

1. Take responsibility for your inner life
Pay attention to what you feel, not to judge it, but to understand it. No one else can do this work for you.

2. Stop outsourcing leadership
Do not wait for your wife, your past, or your circumstances to change first. Start somewhere. A parked car never goes anywhere.

3. Stay present when it’s uncomfortable
Do not force. Do not flee. Stay. This is hard work, but this is what leading looks like.

Leadership does not mean doing all the work alone. A healthy relationship requires both of you to show up in ways that create safety. Remember, you are responsible for your part, and she is responsible for hers. Kind of like your neighbors. You are responsible for your yard and they are responsible for theirs.

Final Thought

Leadership isn’t about getting it right every time.
It’s about becoming someone steady enough to stand beside.

You don’t need to be perfect. There was only one perfect man, and his name was not yours.

You do need to be present. That is where everything begins.

If you’re looking for cheap things to do in Fort Walton Beach, Goofy Golf is a must! This iconic mini golf course has been entertaining families since 1958 with its quirky statues and old-school charm. It’s the perfect throwback activity for your budget-friendly beach trip. We have been visiting for years and they have started to renovate over the past year. Several new obstacles, fresh paint, and updated lanscaping have been completed under new ownership.

Pro tip: Go in the evening when the temperature drops and the statues light up for a magical, family-friendly good time.

Explore the Air Force Armament Museum — Eglin AFB

Looking for free things to do on the Emerald Coast? The Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin Air Force Base is a fantastic stop. It offers a great collection of historic aircraft, missiles, and military memorabilia. It’s a great way to mix a little learning into your budget-friendly beach activities. Leave it to the homeschool family, right?! Lol.

This museum exceeded our expectations. It is big enough to have some amazing pieces and small enough to not spend the entire day there. Even our elemtary aged girls loved the memorabilia and the stories behind it.

Location: 100 Museum Dr, Eglin AFB, FL 32542
Cost: Free!

Perfect for history lovers and anyone looking for affordable family vacation ideas.

Snorkel at O’Steen Public Beach Access (East Jetty)

Want to experience underwater adventure on a budget? Head to O’Steen Public Beach Access near the East Jetty in Destin, one of the best spots for snorkeling on a budget in Florida. If you bring your own gear, it’s completely free! The area is made up of four small inlets with the jetty semi protecting the area from the pass. There is beach access at each of the inlets.

My son and I have a tradition to catch the sunrise on a beach walk each year. This year we decided to catch some early snorkling before anyone was in the water. It paid off, too. We saw a few puffer fish, several jelly fish, crabs, so many varieties of fish, and a sea turtle! I didn’t get pictures since we left our phones in the car.

Location: 320 Gulf Shore Dr, Deston, FL 32541
Cost: Free! We parked just ourside of the entrance and parking there is $20 for four hours. There may be cheaper or free parking somewhere else. I guess we will look next year!!

This is a true gem for families looking for budget-friendly beach activities.

Share a Meal at McGuire’s Irish Pub

Eating out doesn’t have to blow your travel budget! McGuire’s Irish Pub in Destin is famous for its fun atmosphere and gigantic portions, perfect for splitting. Sharing plates is a great strategy for traveling on a budget while still enjoying delicious local food. They do have an option to split the entree and get an extra side and salad for a bit more money. Still a great deal!

Location: 33 US-98 Destin, FL 32541
Cost: Varies but splitting meals makes it very budget-friendly

Insider tip: Try their 18¢ Senate Bean Soup! Yes, you heard me. This is another way to get plenty of food for the price. Each entree qualifies for the discounted bowl of Senate Bean Soup. Also, check out the ceiling and almost every other square inch of wood in the restaurant. They have over $1.000.000 in one dollar bills hanging from the ceiling and walls throughout the restaurant. They will bring you a stapler and marker if you want to leave a message on your bill.

Visit Seaside — A Charming Coastal Village

For a classic, postcard-perfect Florida experience, take the short drive for a day trip to Seaside. This colorful, iconic beach town is known for its pastel cottages, white picket fences, and that small-town charm. You might recognize it from the movie The Truman Show! This beautiful little town is unlike any other town we have visited. Be prepared to fall in love.

Wandering around Seaside is completely free. You can stroll through the open-air market, explore art galleries, and take in the beautiful architecture. The beach views here are stunning and make for perfect photo ops. Buying souvenirs at the local Seaside stores will most likely not fit into the budget-friendly beach activities category, though! Lol!

Location: Seaside, about 25 miles east of Fort Walton Beach
Cost: Free to visit and walk around

Budget tip: Food trucks, cute cafes, and boutique shops here can be pricey, so plan ahead. Even if you’re just window shopping or grabbing an ice cream, it’s still a fun and memorable stop that won’t cost a thing if you skip the splurges!

Perfect for those looking for cheap things to do in Fort Walton Beach and a romantic or family-friendly evening.

Plan Your Affordable Family Vacation Today!

Bonus Tips for Traveling on a Budget

Visit during off-season (spring or fall) for lower prices on accommodations. We love to go in mid to late May often making the budget-friendly beach activities even cheaper.

Pack snacks and drinks to avoid pricey beach concessions.

Look for free or low-cost local events happening during your stay.

Budget-friendly beach activities typically don’t just happen. They take pre-planning. If you wait until you are on vacation it’s easier to get wrapped in the emotions of spending more money for memories.

When you’re traveling as a family, where you stay matters. Over the years, we’ve tried hotels and vacation rentals. Without a doubt, short-term rentals have become our go-to. In this post, I’ll share why we choose short-term rentals vs hotels for families when traveling…especially as a family of six. Whether you’re planning a fun getaway or an emotional family trip, here’s what makes short-term rentals the best places to stay with family.

A Real-Life Look at Short-Term Rentals vs Hotels for Families

We were reminded why we choose short-term rentals on a recent trip. We traveled to Dayton, Ohio, for a family funeral a few weeks ago. It was a quick, emotional trip—just the two of us and our younger kids (ages 10 and 8). Our older two were finishing up their college semester and couldn’t come.

We found a two-bedroom short-term rental in a fairly central location. The rental was simple and small, but it was all we needed—and it was significantly cheaper than nearby hotel options. This was a great reminder of how short-term rentals vs. hotels stack up when you’re traveling on a budget with kids.

The Airbnb was newly renovated, which was really nice. Everything felt new and clean. It was a small bungalow-style house with two bedrooms and one full bathroom. The neighborhood was a bit rough-looking, but it was quiet and felt safe.

Even though the reason for the trip was difficult, we made space for connection. We had a huge family dinner at a famous local spot—Marion’s Pizza. This is a big deal if you’re from Dayton! Dayton-style pizza is super thin, with toppings spread all the way to the edges. They don’t make pizza like this in our home state!!

After the funeral, we visited the Spaghetti Warehouse in downtown Dayton. This building is filled with character, tons of history, and charm that makes you feel like you’re eating in a time capsule. The decor pays homage to local heroes, the Wright Brothers, Norman Rockwell, and various famous artists. The food was so good; our favorite part was the sourdough bread and garlic butter.

The other side of my family also had a small breakfast get-together at Bob Evans. Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Biscuits, pancakes…Need I say more? It was wonderful, and spending time connecting with family was great.

Of course, we couldn’t leave Ohio without getting Skyline Chili—a Cincinnati classic. Honestly, it might just be my favorite food on the planet.

Each of these meals became a little moment of normalcy in the middle of a heavy trip. And coming “home” to a quiet, peaceful, and private rental each night made all the difference.

8 Benefits of Short-Term Rentals for Families

Whether we’re traveling for something exciting or something unexpected, here’s why we usually skip the hotel and go for a rental:

1. Separate Bedrooms = Better Sleep

When traveling with kids, having everyone’s own space is a game-changer. I don’t want to go to bed at the same time as our kids. If we stay at a hotel, it’s lights out for everyone at our elementary-age girls’ bedtime. I don’t want to tiptoe around a hotel room in the dark.

We also have six in our family: two college students and two younger kids. Six people in one hotel room? It just doesn’t work. At all. We have tried, and it was miserable. A short-term rental gives us space to unwind after bedtime routines are over.

2. Feels More Like Home

There’s something comforting about staying in a real home. There’s a couch to curl up on, a table to eat around, and a kitchen to make coffee in the morning without standing under fluorescent lights. Sure, the breakfast is complimentary—but I’d rather eat without being surrounded by 41 strangers in their pajamas.

Short-term rentals are a competitive market. So we see hosts doing and offering more to make their rentals feel like homes. “Home” on the road beats a hotel in my book.

3. A Full Kitchen Saves Money

Having a full-size fridge for snacks and drinks is a must. With six of us, a hotel fridge can’t hold all our cold items. A vacation rental kitchen is one of the best benefits of short-term rentals, just making breakfast or lunch in helps keep costs down (and keeps kids happy).

Eating out three meals a day with a big family adds up fast.

4. It’s Often Cheaper

Hotel rates were surprisingly high for our Ohio trip near the funeral location. The rental we found was not only more comfortable but also significantly cheaper. That kind of savings makes a real difference.

Also, vacation rentals for big families are often more budget-friendly than booking multiple hotel rooms. The value is hard to beat, especially if you’re looking for a family-friendly Airbnb.

Our trip was last-minute, so our options were semi-limited, but the available rentals were prime for a discount.

Travel Pro Tip: Message the host and ask for a discount (especially if it is a last-minute booking)!!

5. No Noisy Neighbors

You don’t share walls or ceilings with strangers in a vacation rental. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve stayed in a hotel and heard stomping, talking, or loud TV or music through the walls. Ever have the kids running around above you in a hotel at 5 am? What about the party down the hall? In a short-term rental, there’s no need to worry about paper-thin walls or noisy hallways at 11 p.m.

6. Space to Spread Out

It makes such a difference to have a little elbow room. Hotel rooms can feel cramped fast, especially if you’re stuck inside due to weather or need a minute to breathe. Even if it is just Kasey and me, the room seems to get smaller after a while. And if we want to watch TV, we have to sit on the bed. There is no couch or multiple chairs in every room. The bottom line is that a hotel room is not really an option for all six of us. We can squeeze, but I fear for all of our sanity if we try.

7. Laundry Access

Many short-term rentals include washers and dryers. For longer trips (or spills and surprises), that’s a huge perk. Also, I am crazy about keeping the dirty clothes pile as small as possible. With a big family, you have to stay on top of the dirty laundry, or you will get overwhelmed. This is why I always look for rentals with laundry access.

8. You Feel Like a Local

One of our favorite things about staying in short-term rentals is the chance to feel like locals. Whether in a small town or a big city, an Airbnb with kids lets you explore local spots at your own pace—no crowded lobbies or set breakfast hours.

Staying in a residential area instead of a commercial district lets you experience a city differently. You get to see and experience parts of the city you never would at a hotel by the interstate. It’s quieter, more personal, and often puts you close to hidden local gems, like Marion’s Pizza or Spaghetti Warehouse.

Family-Friendly Vacation Rentals vs Hotels: What Works for Us

When you’re planning a trip, choosing the right place to stay can shape the entire experience. For our family, short-term vacation rentals check all the boxes: comfort, space, privacy, and affordability. Whether you use Airbnb, Vrbo, or another booking platform, we’ve found that short-term rentals give families the freedom to rest, reconnect, and enjoy the journey without the stress that hotels can bring.

Final Thoughts on Short-Term Rentals vs Hotels for Families

Traveling with kids doesn’t have to be chaotic. Choosing short-term rentals vs hotels for families gives us the freedom and comfort we need to focus on what matters most…our time together. Whether it’s a fun vacation or a meaningful family gathering, the little things (like separate bedrooms, a quiet space, and homemade coffee) help us feel grounded.

Whether it’s an Airbnb or another vacation rental, finding the right family-friendly stay can make a big difference. From kitchens to extra space to better sleep for everyone, short-term rentals are the best option for traveling families. We’ve learned that these are truly some of the best places to stay with family when traveling, especially if you want comfort, quiet, and a little room to breathe.

Bradford Flats: A Perfect Host for our Nashville Weekend Getaway

Our home base in Nashville was a stylish one-bedroom flat in a renovated commercial office complex. The Bradford Flats is Nashville’s up-and-coming condo community, located less than five miles from downtown. The industrial-chic space featured polished concrete floors, exposed metal rafters, and ductwork, creating a unique urban atmosphere.

Modern amenities like a fully stocked kitchen, a bed that was sooo comfy, an in-unit washer and dryer, and a tiled shower stocked with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner made us feel right at home. The quiet commercial area provided a peaceful retreat from the bustling city center.

Things to do in Nashville for Couples: Centennial Park and the Parthenon

A visit to Centennial Park was a highlight of our trip. The park’s crown jewel is the full-scale replica of the Parthenon. WOW. That is all I could say. This architectural marvel, originally built for Tennessee’s 1897 Centennial Exposition, now serves as an art museum. The proximity of these landmarks make them one of the best Nashville attrations for couples

Unfortunately, we were running a little behind for the day and didn’t get to the park until dark, so we didn’t get to tour the art museum. However, we did spend time exploring the beautiful park grounds, admiring the Parthenon’s massive presence, and enjoying the local atmosphere as families and friends finished their picnics, recreation, and live music. We loved out Nashville date night.

Capitol Building Tour

Our tour of the Tennessee State Capitol offered an amazing glimpse into the state’s political history. The Greek Revival building sitting atop a hill in downtown Nashville has stunning architecture and beautiful city views.

We learned intriguing facts about the building’s construction, the state’s governance, and notable figures in Tennessee’s political landscape. This building was built in 1859. How in the world was something so amazing built so long ago without today’s technology? It was amazing to see where our State Representatives and Senators negotiate bills, eventually conduct business, and vote. My favorite was the Legislative Lounge, where the details behind many laws are hammered out. What Nashville weekend getaway would be complete without super nerdy homeschool stuff? Right? lol!

Nashville Attraction for Couples: Ryman Auditorium

No trip to Nashville is complete without experiencing the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Known as the “Mother Church of Country Music,” this historic venue NEVER disappoints.

We were fortunate to catch a live event here, and the acoustics, I’m told, are simply phenomenal. I really don’t understand any of that. lol! My husband is in awe of the building (every time we visit) and the sounds that come out of it. The Ryman’s intimate setting and storied past, starting as a church and hosting countless music legends, created an unforgettable night that totally describes Nashville’s musical soul. Ryman…we will be back in two months to visit again. lol.

Nashville Farmers Market

We had the chance to drop by the Nashville Farmers Market. It was a weekday and around lunch, so unfortunately, most of the booths were already closed. We did strike gold with one of the veggie and fruit stands—peaches and blackberries!! The food court is amazing and has a fantastic variety of foods. The garden center is amazing. My hubby is obsessed with all things landscaping and plants. He was like a kid in a toy store.

The Food Scene on Our Nashville Weekend Getaway

Nashville’s food scene absolutely never lets us down. The city offers a perfect mix of Southern comfort and innovative cuisine. We tend to enjoy traditional Southern food more than the trendy food scene. We have had romantic getaways to Nashville that included much fancier and intimate dining experiences but this Nashville weekend getaway was about enjoying some of our favorite Nashville dining spots.

Loveless Cafe

We indulged in classic Southern hospitality at the historic Loveless Cafe, famous for its flaky biscuits, homemade jams, veggies, and fried chicken. Between the two of us, we had fried chicken, fried okra, green beans, creamed corn, and smashed potatoes.

Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint

Martin’s BBQ, one of the most popular BBQ restaurants in Nashville, satisfied our craving for authentic Tennessee barbecue with its smoky, tender meats and delicious sides. We split a sampler meal that feeds “one,” and there was more than enough food for both of us. The pork and brisket had great flavor. Fresh French fries and green beans were also great.

The BBQ sauce was not my favorite. It is a West TN vinegar-based sauce. Most BBQ restaurants I’ve eaten at have offered several types of sauce, but Martin’s is locked in on the vinegar sauce. All-in-all, it was a good experience. It has a really cool vibe, with an indoor and a huge outdoor area for eating.

Country Cafe

Y’all, this was a find!! Tiny and tucked away a few minutes from downtown Nashville is The Country Cafe, which met our taste for a home-style breakfast. Picture a hometown Waffle House that is family-owned and run. The staff was great, and the food—OH MY! My hubby had a sausage and cheese omelet, and I had a ham, egg, and cheese biscuit. This place hit the spot!

Till Five Pizza

After our night at the Ryman, we were definitely hungry, but there were very few things open that late. We could have walked to Broadway for a late dinner, but that is really not our scene. We opted for a late-night pizza place. Till Five Pizza is, well, open until 5 AM. So, this food really qualifies as food that would be served to folks who would be eating pizza at the same time most of us are waking up. It’s not the worst, but definitely not the best!! Pizza was better than the staff.

Wrap Up of out Nashville Weekend Getaway

Our Nashville weekend getaway offered a perfect blend of history, music, nature, and mouthwatering food. We really got the best of both worlds on this trip. Our trendy, quiet flat was the perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring. There’s just something about Nashville that hooks you. It holds a special place in our hearts since this is where we renewed our wedding vows a few years ago.

The city has this really cool vibe where cowboy boots meet hipster coffee shops. We’re just homeschool parents with kids from elementary school to college, so we kind of end up right in the middle—not too cowboy and definitely not too hipster. lol. This is a defeinte must try because there are so many things to do in Nashville for couples.

This Nashville weekend getaway barely scratched the surface, and I’m already itching to go back. There’s so much more to see and do in this town. Make time to visit Nashville. I promise it’s a city you’ll grow so fond of.

Our 3-bedroom, 3-bath condo was on the 17th floor, which meant coffee on the balcony with a full view of the emerald water every morning. It was peaceful and stunning, and let me tell you…eating breakfast on the balcony while watching and listening to the waves roll in? That’s the kind of quiet parents dream about.

The condo came with free beach service—two chairs and an umbrella set up every day just for us. No hauling gear across the sand while juggling sunscreen and towels. That’s a win, especially for a family of six!

The kids loved the oceanfront pool (complete with a waterfall), and we even took a few dips in the hot tub after dinner. The biggest surprise was the random pink unicorn that showed up at the pool. Yeah, weird to me too! Lol.

There’s a tennis court, basketball court, and even a gym if you like to work out on vacation.

🍀 McGuire’s Irish Pub

We ate here more than once—because once is never enough. McGuire’s has excellent steaks, burgers, and shepherd’s pie. That’s exactly what we ordered, along with the delicious bread and honey butter as well as the bean soup!! As good as the food is, the real experience is the pub itself. It’s covered in over a million signed dollar bills and feels like a quirky Irish time capsule. Definitely a must if you’re after kid-friendly restaurants in Destin, FL that adults love too. I promise you will leave satisfied!

It’s casual, quick, and so satisfying after a day at the beach.

Pro tip: Order the banana pudding. You can thank me later.

🍕 Merlin’s Pizza

Delivered straight to the condo = poolside lunch win for everyone. We didn’t even have to put on shoes.
You haven’t done Destin right if you haven’t had The Donut Hole. The food is so good, and the donuts are even more incredible! They serve a full southern breakfast, so come hungry.

🌮 Pepito’s

Our family loves Mexican food. I mean, we really love it. So, of course, we have to find a great local spot. Pepito’s is a great Mexican restaurant in Destin with delicious fajitas, fresh salsa, and quick service. We all left full and happy—and that’s saying something with our crew.

🌯 Burritacos

A total hidden gem. Like in a gas station, hidden. These were probably the most authentic tacos we’ve had. It’s authentic, tucked away, and worth finding.

Pro tip: There are only two tables, and you may not understand the employees of Burritacos unless you also speak Spanish.
☕ Café Destin

We visited Cafe Destin for Mother’s Day brunch, and we couldn’t have picked a better spot. It’s laid-back but still feels a little special—perfect for pancakes and celebrating. It really gave my wife a chance to take in all of her thoughts and feelings on Mother’s Day.

Making Mother’s Day Special on a Destin Beach Vacation

We happened to be in Destin over Mother’s Day, which made the trip even more special. We took the day to celebrate my wife, the amazing mom who keeps our family running.

We started the morning slowly—coffee on the balcony, lots of hugs, and “You’re the best, Mom!” from the kids.

For brunch, we went to Café Destin, and it was perfect. Cozy little outside table, great food, and a great atmosphere to hang around and eat just a little slower.

Later that day, the surprise Walmart moment happened, which honestly felt like a cherry on top. Celebrating Mother’s Day at the beach, with sunshine, family, and new memories, will be hard to beat.

The Wildest Walmart Pickup Ever

So this was totally unexpected. We went to pick up our grocery order, and several Walmart employees came running out to the car like we were celebrities. Turns out, my wife won their Mother’s Day giveaway—even though she didn’t enter anything! They handed her a giant bag of summer goodies and posted her on their social media.

We have had some tough seasons of marriage that have made my wife question herself. Question her value and worth. This was a divine moment for the Creator to show her how special she is. She was shocked and glowing. It was just one of those sweet little surprises that make a trip extra special.

Our Favorite Things to Do in Destin with Kids

After dinner, we’d hit up Silver Sands Premium Outlets or Destin Commons. They’re both packed with stores for all ages, so our younger kids could grab candy, cute souvenirs, and beg for a Build-A-Bear, and our older kids could grab a Starbucks.

Our favorite part of the trip? Mini golf at Goofy Golf in Fort Walton Beach—an old-school spot that’s been around since 1958. It’s a little quirky and super nostalgic, with big colorful statues and winding little courses that are just the right amount of silly. It’s one of the best fun activities in Destin for kids that grown-ups love, too, and it’s cheap! Between the beach, the food, the games, and the unexpected Walmart moment, it felt like a true getaway. It was not rushed, not overscheduled, just full of fun, sunshine, and the kind of memories you bring up around the dinner table for years. This is what matters—great memories.

If you’re searching for the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and cozy winter vibes, a Utah winter getaway delivers it all. Kasey and I celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary there, and it was everything we hoped for, breathtaking scenery, incredible food, and so much fun. From heart-racing snowmobiling adventures to peaceful evenings enjoying Christmas lights, every moment was special. There are so many things to do in Utah in winter. Here’s a look at our trip to help you plan your own unforgettable getaway.

Where to Stay in Salt Lake City: Hyatt Regency Hotel Review

Our stay at the Hyatt Regency in Salt Lake City was nothing short of amazing. Located in the heart of the city, this hotel made it easy to access everything on our itinerary. We stayed on the 19th floor. The views? Absolutely breathtaking. Floor-to-ceiling windows gave us a front-row seat to the night lights of Salt Lake City’s valley and the snow-capped mountains. Waking up to that? Pure magic.

Our room had a comfortable king-sized bed, and the decor was sleek and modern. The staff was another highlight—they were incredibly helpful and professional, always ensuring we had everything we needed to enjoy our Utah winter getaway. Kasey and I were trying to take pictures in front of their Christmas tree and one of the workers came from across the lobby just to take a few pictures for us.

The lobby was huge and offered several high-end restaurants. The Market, located off the lobby, offered fresh pastries, sweets, and a menu perfect for room service or quick pickup. And the drink options? A lifesaver for caffeine lovers like me—coffees, sodas, energy drinks, you name it. And let’s be real—vacation isn’t vacation without a little candy stash. No judging here! lol!

The only downside was the parking situation. I saw this in many Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City reviews but didn’t grasp it until I was there. The hotel uses a public parking garage, and while it’s semi-convenient location-wise, the cost adds up quickly. Despite this minor inconvenience, the Hyatt Regency provided the comfort and quality you’d expect from a high-end hotel.

After settling into the Hyatt Regency, it was time to dive into the adventures that make Utah such a winter wonderland.

Snowmobiling in Park City: Thousand Peaks Ranch Review

No winter trip to Utah is complete without a Park City snowmobiling tour, and ours did not disappoint. We booked with Park City Peaks Snowmobiling, and the experience was unforgettable. Our guided tour took place during a snowstorm, and while that may sound intimidating, it added to the magic. Have you seen Frozen? That is exactly what it felt like.

It was so cool riding the trails while snowflakes filled the air. I grew up in Ohio and I hadn’t seen snow like this! Our guide made the experience even better. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and full of fascinating tidbits about the 20,000-acre private ranch where we rode…Thousand Peaks Ranch. The trails were pure magic. Snow-covered mountains and postcard-worthy views everywhere you looked.

The lodge was cozy and welcoming, the perfect place to warm up before or after your ride. The only inconvenience was the outdoor restrooms. Definitely not ideal when it’s freezing outside. Some of the trails were a bit rough and could use maintenance, but overall, the experience was amazing. We snapped tons of pics, and every single one looked like it belonged on a Christmas card. Now I see why Utah winter getaways are so special!

Woodward Park City is a must-visit if you’re traveling with family or just want to feel like a kid again. The tubing hills here are some of the longest and highest in Utah. The staff was incredibly friendly and so helpful, making the experience enjoyable and fun from start to finish. Special shout out to Zeke. He was so helpful and kind.

Broadway in Salt Lake City: Eccles Theatre Musical Review

Seeing Shrek the Broadway Musical at the Eccles Theatre was one of the highlights of our trip. I am a total musical fan so this was right up my alley. The venue is absolutely stunning—easily one of the nicest theaters we’ve ever been to. From the moment you walk in, the elegance and attention to detail make it feel like a special occasion.

Admission was quick and easy, and the staff was helpful in guiding us to our seats. The performance itself was top-tier. This was a traveling Broadway show, and it exceeded every expectation we had. The actors, costumes, and set design were phenomenal, making it an unforgettable afternoon.

The only minor downside was the limited food and drink options at the theater, but it didn’t take away from the experience. If you have a chance to catch a show at Eccles Theatre, I highly recommend it.

LDS Temple Square Christmas Lights & Holiday Tour

The LDS campus in Salt Lake City was under heavy renovation during our visit, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying its charm. The highlight was the Christmas lights—millions of twinkling lights illuminated the campus, creating a magical, festive atmosphere.

The LDS staff were welcoming and eager to answer any questions we had, adding a personal touch to the visit. While we didn’t get to experience the free genealogy service called FamilySearch during its business hours, it’s a wonderful resource for anyone interested in tracing their ancestry. Overall, the campus was a peaceful and beautiful spot to soak in the holiday spirit.

Where to Eat in Salt Lake City & Park City: Restaurant Guide

Utah has no shortage of great dining options, and we made the most of it during our trip. For our anniversary dinner, we went to Ruth’s Chris in Salt Lake City—our favorite spot for a special meal. As always, the food was cooked to perfection, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel celebrated, even surprising us with a free dessert.

Other memorable meals included:

Donut House: Perfect for a quick breakfast. The apple fritter was fresh, delicious, and unforgettable.

Park City Roadhouse Grill: Great onion rings and fries, though the sliders were a bit heavy on the bread.

Davanza’s Pizza: Cozy and tasty, though the small tables made seating a bit cramped.

Brickyard Bar: A laid-back bar with decent food. It was funny having to show my ID—it’s been a while since I’ve done that for anything other than voting!

Travel Tips: Renting a Car & Flying into Salt Lake City

Getting around Utah was easy thanks to Sixt rent a car. I had never heard of this company. Maybe it’s because I haven’t rented a car in YEARS. While their location is off-site from the airport, the free shuttle service was quick and convenient. Junior was so noligable and incredibly helpful. They upgraded us to a 4WD GMC Terrain at no extra charge, which was a lifesaver in snowy Park City.

We flew with American Airlines, and as frequent flyers with priority status, we were treated exceptionally well. From seamless upgrades to even landing first-class seats on one leg, it was a stress-free travel experience.
